SIX really good NATURAL cough remedies

Here are 6 really good ways to naturally work on this annoying feeling.

1. Honey
Honey is a time-honored remedy for a sore throat. According to one study, it can also relieve coughs more effectively than over-the-counter medicines that contain dextromethorphan (DM), a cough suppressant.

You can create your own remedy at home by mixing up to 2 teaspoons of honey with herbal tea or warm water and lemon. The honey does the soothing, while the lemon juice can help with congestion. You can also simply eat the honey by the spoonful or spread it on bread for a snack.

2. Probiotics
Probiotics are microorganisms that can provide a host of health benefits. While they don’t relieve a cough directly, they do help to balance your gastrointestinal flora. Gastrointestinal flora are the bacteria that live in your intestines.

This balance can support immune system function throughout the body. Evidence also suggests that Lactobacillus, a bacterium in dairy, can reduce the likelihood of a cold or flu and sensitivity to certain allergens, such as pollen.

Fortified milk is a great source of Lactobacillus. You should be cautious, however, as dairy may make phlegm thicker. You can also purchase probiotic supplements at most health food stores and drug stores. Each supplement manufacturer may have different daily recommended intakes. Probiotics are also added to some yogurt types and are present in miso soup and sourdough breads.

3. Pinapples
You don’t usually think of pineapple as a cough remedy, but that’s probably because you’ve never heard of bromelain. There’s evidence to suggest that bromelain — an enzyme found only in the stem and fruit of pineapples — can help suppress coughs as well as loosen the mucus in your throat. To enjoy the most benefits of pineapple and bromelain, eat a slice of pineapple or drink 3.5 ounces of fresh pineapple juice three times a day.

Bromelain supplements should not be taken by children or adults who take blood thinners. Also, be careful using bromelain if you’re also on antibiotics such as amoxicillin, as it can increase the absorption of the antibiotic. Always speak to your doctor before taking new or unfamiliar supplements.

4. Peppermint
Peppermint leaves are well known for their healing properties. Menthol in peppermint soothes the throat and acts as a decongestant, helping to break down mucus. You can benefit by drinking peppermint tea or by inhaling peppermint vapors from a steam bath. To make a steam bath, add 3 or 4 drops of peppermint oil for every 150 milliliters of hot water. Drape a towel over your head, and take deep breaths directly above the water.

5. Thyme
Thyme is used by some for respiratory illnesses. One study suggests that the essence extracted from thyme leaves mixed with ivy can help relieve coughing as well as short-term bronchitis. The leaves contain compounds called flavonoids that relax the throat muscles involved in coughing and lessen inflammation.

You can make thyme tea at home using 2 teaspoons of crushed thyme leaves and 1 cup of boiling water. Cover the cup, steep for 10 minutes, and strain.

7. Salt and water gargle
While the remedy may seem relatively simple, a salt and water gargle can help soothe a scratchy throat that causes you to cough. Mixing 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 8 ounces of warm water can help to relieve irritation.

Few people would ever claim that energy drinks are healthy, but it’s easy to assume they’re fine for your health given how popular they are. But new research suggests they’re actually pretty bad for you.

The study, published in Frontiers in Public Health, reviewed current scientific evidence on energy drinks and found that their short-term benefits (namely, they can make you feel more awake) are outweighed by scary health risks like mental health problems, risk-seeking behavior, increased blood pressure, obesity, tooth erosion, and kidney damage.

Lady Gaga has postponed the European leg of her world tour because she is in “severe physical pain,” according to a statement posted this morning on Twitter. This comes just days after the singer canceled a performance in Brazil and revealed that she suffers from fibromyalgia—a chronic illness she also addresses in her new documentary, Gaga: Five Foot Two.

The 31-year-old star “remains under the care of expert medical professionals who recommended the postponement earlier today,” Monday’s statement reads. “She plans to spend the next seven weeks proactively working with her doctors to heal from this and past traumas that still affect her daily life, and result in severe physical pain in her body.”

Fibrostruggles - Why you need more sleep



We all know sleep is important, but few people realize that not getting enough sleep pretty much neutralizes the benefits of healthy eating and exercise.
When we sleep, protein production takes place that provides the necessary building blocks for cell growth and repair: The body recovers from stress damage, damage caused by ultraviolet rays and immunity is boosted.
Without sufficient rest the body is weakened, exposing us to greater risk of poor health.
Lack of sleep also wreaks havoc with our hormones.
In fact, just one night of missed or inadequate sleep is sufficient to make you as insulin resistant as a type 2 diabetic.
Lack of sleep causes persistently high cortisol levels, which can cause a myriad of disorders, including thyroid and metabolic dysfunction, cognitive decline and low serotonin levels – resulting in depression, irritability, anxiety and carb cravings.
Lost sleep affects physiological and cognitive functions like memory and attention, complex thought, motor response and emotional control. It also makes us pretty miserable, irritable and stressed.
So why then are we sleeping so little?
The average night’s sleep decreased from about 9 hours in 1910 to about 7.5 hours in 1975, and is now at an all time average low of 6.5 hours, with many shift workers getting 5 hours or less.
But even more worrying than losing a couple of hours here and there is that a huge number of people are using medication to aid sleep.
An estimated 10% of the American population takes some form of medication to sleep.(Source: National Sleep Foundation).
A study headed up by Dr. Daniel Kripke of the Scripps Clinic, compared 10,529 people that took sleeping pills with twice as many who didn’t.
The study revealed that those taking prescriptions were at a 35% increased risk of cancer compared with the non-prescription group. The study showed that the risk of developing lymphoma, lung, colon or prostate cancer associated with sleeping pills was greater than the effect from smoking.
Pretty shocking, I know.
It’s crazy. Instead of making positive, natural changes to our lifestyle and environment we resort to sleeping pills, wake up pills, caffeinated drinks and other stimulants to get us through the day.
Sure, it’s very challenging to find more time for sleep in an increasingly busy world where we’ve more to do and more to think about.
But the truth is we’ve also become our own worst enemy: We stay up too late, we eat too late, we stimulate the brain with computers and phones all day long, we constantly eat stimulants and we don’t give the brain adequate time to rest, relax and wind down each day before bed.
Sleep is as natural as eating and drinking. So why then are we working against this natural function rather than embracing it?

This is how the human body was designed, and if you continually work against the natural order of sleep, you will disrupt the body’s sleep-wake cycle and suffer negative health effects because of it.
Abusing the sleep-wake cycle over a prolonged period can lead to the onset of insomnia, which has serious health risks.
The good news is that it’s easy to improve the quality of your sleep. Most cases of poor quality sleep and insomnia can be cured using six core steps, as documented in Peter Litchfield’s book Six Steps To Sleep.

This is one of the many reasons one of the 'perks' is depression.

Signs and symptoms of depression include:
  • Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
  • Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You’ve lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure.
  • Appetite or weight changes. Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.
  • Sleep changes. Either insomnia, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping.
  • Anger or irritability. Feeling agitated, restless, or even violent. Your tolerance level is low, your temper short, and everything and everyone gets on your nerves.
  • Loss of energy. Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained. Your whole body may feel heavy, and even small tasks are exhausting or take longer to complete.
  • Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and mistakes.
  • Reckless behavior. You engage in escapist behavior such as substance abuse, compulsive gambling, reckless driving, or dangerous sports.
  • Concentration problems. Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
  • Unexplained aches and pains. An increase in physical complaints such as headaches, back pain, aching muscles, and stomach pain.

Common Fibromyalgia Symptom

Fibromyalgia sufferers know the feeling of depression too well, but prescribed pills are not the only way to deal with it.  There are more than a few ways to treat, and beat, depression.
